THEMES OF CENSORSHIP - Violence
For a long time, the excess of violence at the cinema was also synonymous for an excess of realism. And this led to films such as I vinti (The Vanquished) by Antonioni or Salvatore Giuliano by Rosi coming under the censor’s wrath. Only later would violence become a characterizing element of certain fundamental genres: the Mondo movie, the spaghetti western, Dario Argento-style thrillers, gritty cop movies from the 1970s, horror flicks. And, until this very day, these are the genres that the censors have concentrated their efforts on with regards to requesting cuts to portrayals of violence.
